Background

Engineering codes, standards and specifications are developed to ensure the quality and safety of systems, structures and components. The main purpose of engineering codes is to protect the public. Engineering codes are enforced by governmental agencies and they are critical to developing industry practices. Engineering standards are typically prepared by a professional group or committee to ensure that companies adhere to accepted practices relating to design, construction, maintenance and personnel safety. They are written to contain good and appropriate engineering practices and to prescribe mandatory requirements. Specifications are developed by companies to ensure consistency and safety across their facilities. Understanding the engineering basis for the listed requirements and the intended safety margins allows engineers to produce safely operating systems on a consistent basis. We use several codes, standards and specifications that are common in the mechanical, civil and structural engineering fields.
